Our Amsterdam reel

If you’d rather have it day by day, this reel walks you through it:

  • Day 1: the Brouwersgracht and Prinsengracht canals, the Anne Frank House, the Negen Straatjes, fries from Fabel Friet and a Dutch waffle, the Royal Palace, the Flower Market and the Van Gogh Museum. Then a canal boat tour and, to finish, the Jordaan, the Begijnhof, the Beurspassage, the Dancing Houses and the Red Light District.
  • Day 2: Zaandam and its colourful houses, the windmills of Zaanse Schans and, back in Amsterdam, the Sluishuis, one of its most striking pieces of modern architecture.

What to see in Amsterdam: 12 must-sees

We’ve listed them in the order we saw them over our two days: the first around the canals and the city centre; the second on a day trip to Zaandam and Zaanse Schans.

Day 1: canals, city centre and museums

  • Canal with a bridge and trees in central Amsterdam
    Day 1 · Must-see 1Brouwersgracht

  • Bridge over an Amsterdam canal in autumn
    Day 1 · Must-see 2Prinsengracht

One of the great canals of the historic canal ring, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lined with stone bridges, narrow houses and moored boats.

  • Amsterdam canal at sunset with a church tower in the background
    Day 1 · Must-see 3Anne Frank House

On the Prinsengracht you’ll find the Anne Frank House, where the family hid during the Second World War. A very moving visit; tickets sell out, so book well in advance.

  • Street beside a canal in central Amsterdam
    Day 1 · Must-see 4Negen Straatjes

The “Nine Little Streets” link the canals with independent shops, vintage boutiques and cafés. Perfect for wandering aimlessly.

  • Royal Palace on Dam Square in Amsterdam under a blue sky
    Day 1 · Must-see 5Royal Palace

Right on Dam Square, the former 17th-century town hall is now one of the Dutch Royal Family’s palaces, and you can visit the inside.

  • Flower Market (Bloemenmarkt) in Amsterdam
    Day 1 · Must-see 6Flower Market

The Bloemenmarkt is a floating market on the Singel canal, full of tulips, bulbs and flowers in every colour.

  • Van Gogh Museum building in Amsterdam
    Day 1 · Must-see 7Van Gogh Museum

On Museumplein stands the Van Gogh Museum, home to the largest collection of the painter’s work. As with the Anne Frank House, it’s best to book your ticket in advance.

  • Tree-lined canal with boats and traditional houses in Amsterdam
    Day 1 · Must-see 8Jordaan

The Jordaan is one of Amsterdam’s most charming neighbourhoods: quiet canals, narrow little houses, hidden courtyards and markets.

    Day 1 · Must-see 9Begijnhof

The Begijnhof is a hidden courtyard right in the centre, surrounded by historic houses, and one of the most peaceful spots in the city.

  • Mosaic ceiling and chandeliers in a covered passage in Amsterdam
    Day 1 · Must-see 10Beurspassage

The Beurspassage is a covered passage with a ceiling decorated with mosaics and lamps, one of the most photogenic spots in the centre.

Day 2: Zaandam and Zaanse Schans

  • Traditional green house façades in Zaandam
    Day 2 · Must-see 11Zaandam

Green wooden houses and the quirky Inntel Hotel, which looks like a stack of little houses. It’s about 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal.

  • Windmills of Zaanse Schans, near Amsterdam
    Day 2 · Must-see 12Zaanse Schans

The windmills and green wooden houses along the River Zaan: the perfect day trip to see the most typical side of Holland just a short distance from Amsterdam.

  • Fabel Friet: fries that are worth the queue.
  • Stroopwafel: the authentic Dutch waffle filled with caramel syrup, best freshly made.

Our gear for photographing Amsterdam

In Amsterdam we discovered a different way of using the DJI Osmo Action 6: with the SmallRig Action 6 Street Photography Cage and Filter Kit we turned it into a real street photography camera: compact, easy to carry and perfect for capturing every corner of the city. The CPL filter makes a real difference, as it cuts reflections and gives a much cleaner, more cinematic look.
