By car, on the AP-7 and A-9, you have total freedom to combine several cities. There are also high-speed trains from Barcelona to Perpignan, Narbonne and Toulouse.

Staying in Perpignan or Carcassonne is the most practical way to do the route. In Carcassonne, stay close to the Cité to see it lit up at night.

- Comfortable shoes: you will spend hours on your feet, walking through cobbled old towns.
- A card and some cash: almost all stalls take cards, but coins come in handy at the smaller ones.

What to eat at French Christmas markets
Half the fun of the French Christmas markets is at the food stalls. These are the classics you can’t miss:

Vin chaud
Mulled wine with spices, cinnamon and orange. The classic way to warm up while you stroll between the stalls.

Raclette and tartiflette
Melted cheese over potatoes, sometimes with cured meats. Raclette is scraped right in front of you, and tartiflette comes with reblochon cheese and onion.

Pain d’épices
The spiced cake of French Christmas, made with honey and spices. It is sold as a loaf or in slices and is perfect to take home.

Oysters
At the coastal markets, such as Le Barcarès or Narbonne, it is typical to have them with a glass of local white wine.

Crêpes
Sweet or savoury, freshly made on the griddle. Sugar, Nutella or chestnut cream are the favourites to snack on as you walk.

Nougat
French nougat, soft and made with almonds and honey. The most famous is from Montélimar, and you will find it at almost every market.
