What is the Bosc de Virós?
Not all forests are the same, and the Bosc de Virós proves it. It lies in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, in the Pallars Sobirà, and is one of the only two beech forests inside the park.
Its tall, well-preserved centuries-old beeches create a dense, silent and almost magical atmosphere. The landscape is very different from the open high-mountain areas that dominate this part of the Pyrenees.
It’s also a little-known hike: if you’re looking for an easy, quiet trail in the Lleida Pyrenees, this forest is a real gem.

Moss, centuries-old trees and filtered light: this is Virós.
A forest with over 2,000 years of history
The Bosc de Virós stands out not only for its natural beauty but also for its historical value. Inside it you’ll find traces of more than 2,000 years of human activity linked to the use of the forest. Along the hike you’ll come across:
- Old iron mines
For centuries, they were key to the local economy.
- Charcoal platforms
This is where the charcoal that fuelled the valley’s forges was made.
- Hay meadows and barns
Stone buildings used to store hay and shelter livestock in winter.
- The Pla de Buiro
A small settlement inhabited until the 14th-century crisis, of which one barn still stands today.
Centuries later, the people of Ainet de Besan reused the Pla de Buiro to build farm barns. Today only one remains standing, with a small hut attached: a perfect spot to imagine what life in the Pyrenees was like centuries ago.
The Bosc de Virós loop step by step
The route starts and ends at the same point, the car park at the Virós barns. It’s a comfortable, well-markedtrail with very little elevation gain, ideal for couples, friends or families.
- 1Virós barns car park0 min
Leave the car by the Virós barns, at around 1,280 metres. From here the path heads straight into the forest.
- 2Into the beech forest10–15 min
Suddenly the landscape closes in: tall trees, mossy ground and total silence. This is where the best photos begin.
- 3Mines and charcoal platforms30–45 min
Next, the path passes the remains of old iron mines and charcoal platforms. Look carefully, as some are easy to miss.
- 4Mirador de les Fargues1 h – 1 h 15
Further on, a stretch along the hillside leads to the viewpoint, with open views over the valley. It’s the highest point of the hike, at about 1,430 metres.
- 5Pla de Buiro and back2 h in total
Finally, the path descends through the meadows and the Pla de Buiro barn to close the loop at the car park.
You can do the hike all year round, but with deep snow it’s best to bring snowshoes. If there’s hard snow or ice, the hillside stretch before the Mirador de les Fargues can become dangerous: check conditions before you set off.
- With snow: snowshoes
- With ice: crampons, or better another day
- Tricky stretch: the hillside before the viewpoint

Leaving the forest, the valley opens up completely.

| Spring | Intense green and lots of moisture. | Some stretches can be muddy. |

| Winter | With snow it looks like a fairy-tale forest. | Snowshoes, and watch out for ice on the hillside. |

Wildlife in the Bosc de Virós
Besides its history, the forest is a small paradise for Pyrenean wildlife. Some of the most notable species are:
- Black woodpecker
Europe’s largest woodpecker: you’ll hear it before you see it.
- Great spotted woodpecker
Easy to identify by the distinctive sound of it drumming on trunks.
- Capercaillie
One of the most emblematic and hardest-to-spot birds in the Pyrenees. With patience and silence, you may find one.
- Respect the forest
Stay on the path and keep noise down: this is their habitat.

The capercaillie, the forest’s great hidden treasure.
